Life on the Edge: The Rescue Story of a 13-Year-Old Boy After an Explosion

Artesans Res-Q recently transported a 13year old child to rendezvous with a flight team in Poland. The child suffering with 55% burns as a result of an explosion of electrical equipment, with burnt areas included airways, face and extremities.

On arrival at the hospital the child was in critical condition. Our medical team in collaboration with hospital staff took 12 hours to stabilise the patient in preparation for transport. The treatments carried out included; intubation of the airway, redressing of burns, fluid resuscitation with intravenous therapy including blood products, and also vasopressor support.

Having stabilised the child an 11 hour road transport was undertaken to meet an international medical team. En route the patient was able to receive critical care interventions. These interventions included mechanical ventilation to provide respiratory support, use of vasopressors and blood transfusion to aid circulatory function, pain relief and sedation to ensure the patient was comfortable throughout transport.

Thanks to the skills and dedication of our staff, the child was handed to the flight team in a stable condition. This case highlights the co-operation and skill required to medevac such a critically injured patient. Artesans Res-Q would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved.
